Intro to Weathering Steel (Corten) Powder Coating
Weathering Steel (Corten) Powder Coating refers to specialized powder finishes designed for two purposes: 1) Aesthetic Match: To coat standard steel to mimic the rustic, oxidized appearance (patina) of true Corten steel. 2) Protective Sealing: To apply a clear, protective coat over actual Corten steel to lock in the desirable patina and prevent further oxidation runoff (staining of surrounding materials). These coatings are usually based on UV-stable Polyester or Polyurethane systems, focusing on either high durability (for aesthetic matches) or crystal clarity (for protective seals).
Patina Simulation and Runoff Protection
Aesthetic Match Coatings are formulated using transparent or translucent pigments and fillers to create the complex, multi-toned brown/orange/red hues and rough texture of mature, oxidized Corten steel. This allows standard, less expensive steel to achieve the look of Corten without the environmental issues (oxidized runoff that stains concrete and adjacent materials). Protective Clear Coats are used directly on actual Corten steel. The true Corten steel develops a protective rust layer (patina) that slows further corrosion. A clear powder coat is applied over the fully developed patina to arrest the oxidation process and, crucially, to seal the surface, preventing the rust particles from washing off and staining the surrounding pavement or facade. The clear coat must be UV-stable, highly flexible, and provide excellent adhesion to the porous rust layer.

- A: The steel must be properly pre-weathered to achieve the desired patina depth. The surface should then be cleaned to remove loose particles and grease, but not abrasive blasted, as this would remove the desirable patina layer.
- Q: Is the clear seal coat guaranteed to prevent all future rusting?
- A: The clear seal arrests the surface oxidation and prevents runoff. However, the integrity of the film must be maintained; any damage to the film will allow moisture penetration and local oxidation to resume.
