How to clean powder coated parts

Spraying powder coating is a good way to protect metal parts from wear and prevent rust. When powder coating is applied to metal, it forms a long-lasting protective layer that helps prevent debris and dents. Compared to liquid coating processes or spray painting, powder coatings are thicker, more uniform and more durable. If you plan to use powder coatings at home, you need to be familiar with the basics of the process in order to get the best results. Follow the steps below to clean the parts used for powder coating.

First, please collect your items. You will need a wrench or screwdriver, a clean cloth, oil remover, vinyl gloves and high temperature tape. First, use a wrench or screwdriver to remove the parts. Remove all nuts or bolts at the same time. Powder paint must be applied to clean bare metal. If the part to be used has a finish such as chrome, the part must be sandblasted to remove the finish so that the powder coating can adhere to the surface.

If the metal is exposed, wipe it off with a clean cloth. Then use a degreaser to remove grease or oil. After this step, vinyl gloves should be avoided to avoid leaving greasy fingerprints on the parts.
Next, consider whether you do not want to powder spray the parts. If so, you can use high temperature tape to seal those areas. If there are any holes in which screws or bolts should be screwed in, plug them with a high temperature plug.

Now, you need to hang the items to be powder-coated in the air so that all surfaces are exposed. Chains are a good choice for hanging items.
Before starting the sandblasting process, please wear a breathing mask and safety glasses. Connect the sandblasting machine to the air compressor, and spray the metal objects carefully and evenly. When you are done, make sure to sweep the floor to remove any dust and debris that may be stuck in the powder coating.

Now you can disconnect the blast machine and connect the corona gun to the air compressor. When wearing safety equipment, fill the gun with powder paint. Short and uniform spraying of metal powder paint is like using a can of paint. Check to ensure that the powder coating has been applied evenly and has covered all surfaces and angles. If you want to apply it again, please do it immediately.

The next step is to cure the item. You should place it in an oven heated to 400 degrees and let it cure for 10 – 25 minutes. Allow the parts to cool for a while before removing them from the oven.
Powder coating is undoubtedly a formidable project, so you should consider seeking professional help. It is important to understand that if the job is not completed correctly, the coating will not be able to complete all the work that should be done.
